Health Education
Breast Cancer Awareness is the official Health Education project of the Southern Medical Association Alliance. Judging for Breast Cancer Awareness projects began at the 1996 convention held in Baltimore. The Eileen Martin Award, established in 1993, is presented to the most outstanding state or county Health Education project. The Health Education Award of Excellence is presented to Alliance members who have made an impact in the area of the health education focus. It is also given to an organization or institution, an individual, a family or others who have made a significant contribution to prevention efforts in the areas of the current educational focus.
Breast Cancer Awareness projects may be held at any time during the year but are often held during October – National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 1985 Breast Cancer Awareness began in a small way but has since grown to a major national emphasis. National Mammography Day is October 19.
