Join me as we celebrate our 85th year! This is the second year for our website and we hope you find this as another benefit of your SMAA membership.

We are a dedicated group of physician spouses in 17 southern states who work with health education, with a concentration in the areas of women’s heart health, osteoporosis and breast cancer awareness. We continue our medical heritage preservation and celebrate Doctors’ Day, by honoring our physicians on March 30th.

With the establishment of our own website, linked with our physician partners in the Southern Medical Association, we have the capability of beginning our own Communities of Interest in areas that are “hot buttons” for us–everything from health education, planning for retirement, patient advocacy or office management to experiences working in the office.

85th anniversary; Grapevine, Texas

Barbara Jett and I have enjoyed traveling through the states and meeting many of you. What an inspiration to us you all are! Your projects, your commitment to the family of medicine, and your involvement in your communities speaks volumes about who you are. Please remember to submit your projects to SMAA for judging at our annual session this year December 3-5 in Grapevine, Texas.

Many of you have asked about Grapevine so here is a quick update: Grapevine is outside of Dallas and is known as the “Christmas Capitol of Texas”. There are boutique wineries, a small railroad that runs through the town, an ice show, and decorations worthy of all the Gaylord hotels, just to name a few things for you and your families to see and do. This will be our 85th anniversary celebration so I know you will want to share in all the festivities marking that big event. In addition, we have wonderful speakers lined up and time for social interaction. Please mark your calendars now to partake in this educational, informative, and festive session.

As always, please feel free to contact me, Barbara, or Lisa for any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for welcoming us to your states and including us in your “families”. Always remember we are here to serve you.

Nancy Brant

President, SMAA

Greetings from the Southern Medical Association Alliance!

We are excited about our new website and the things we will be able to offer as yet another benefit of membership.

You already know that we are a dedicated group of physician spouses in the 17 Southern states who work with health education, with a concentration in the areas of women’s heart health, osteoporosis, and breast cancer; and medical heritage preservation. In addition, we began the observance of Doctors’ Day and continue to lead the way in celebrating our physicians across the country.

With the establishment of our own website, linked with our physician partners in the Southern Medical Association, we now have the capability of beginning our own Communities of Interest in areas that are “hot buttons” for us-everything from helping our children fill out college applications, paying for college, planning for retirement, patient advocacy or office management to experiences with spouses working in the office.

In addition, the website enables us to provide two-way communication between members and leadership, or member-to-member. We will have polling and surveying capability. There will be an open forum for public content, and a private blogsite .

As we go forward in this new endeavor, we hope to provide our members with a tool to respond to us and give input in a timely manner on projects, concerns, ideas, and subjects. It will allow us greater transparency for our membership.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of the website is that it will be grassroots driven. YOU will decide the content and steer the topics in the directions YOU find most helpful. YOU will have a voice in discussing and acting on decisions being made that affect your daily living and your spouse’s practice.

If you are not a member and just thinking about joining, I hope you will feel free to use the site and contact other members so you can hear firsthand what SMAA can do for YOU. We are here to serve YOU and are here to listen to your concerns. Together we have a story to tell and this is an exciting new chapter in that book!

Welcome!

Nancy Brant, SMAA President 2008-2009
